My role

Primary designer on the publication at A Story Called, with occasional creative direction oversight: design and layout across the magazine. Editorial content was supplied by Mitie's internal communications team.

The brief

Mitie, one of the UK's largest facilities management companies, wanted a quarterly celebration of company and staff successes. The audience made it interesting: a large workforce spread across client sites nationwide, most of them deskless. Print wasn't nostalgia, it was the channel that actually reached them.

The answer was a more informal take on Mitie's corporate guidelines: warm, people-first, and built to put staff achievements at the forefront.

The system

One masthead design, flexible inside layouts. Each feature takes its own colour world and art direction, a Queen's honour in ceremonial red and blue, frontline ambulance work in high-vis yellow, the Plan Zero sustainability initiative in green, while the publication stays unmistakably The Exceptional. Bold imagery and infographics carry key information, designed for readers flicking through on a break, not studying at a desk.
